What are Active Server Pages?
ASP is a scripting language that can be integrated into standard HTML documents to create dynamic sites. It can also be used to interact with MS SQL databases. Although ASP is a Microsoft development, it is open in the sense that it is merely text that can be edited in any text editor. There are, however, development tools and programs (made by Microsoft) that can be used to make ASP scripting easier. ASP scripts are usually encapsulated within tags. The use of ASP requires an ASP capable server.
What are the advantages of using ASP?
ASP allows programmers to develop web based applications that interface with a database. It is object-oriented and possesses tools that provide for faster development and greater functionality. Two aspects of ASP make it fast - compiled code and caching. With ASP the Code is compiled into "machine language" before your visitor ever comes to your site. It also allows programmers to set up pages or areas of pages that are commonly reused to be cached for a set period of time to improve the performance of web applications. In addition, ASP allows the caching of data from a database so your website isn't slowed down by frequent visits to a database when the data doesn't change very often. ASP also has the flexibility to support more that 25 languages (including VB.Net, C#, and JScript.Net).
How does ASP compare with PHP?
One of ASPs major strengths over PHP is that is it not tied to one language, but can operate with VBScript, Jscript, PerlScript and PythonScript etc. In ASP, the dominant model for database access is ADO, which provides a degree of database independence; PHP has separate functions for each database type, and requires an additional layer to achieve that same degree of independence.
